Obesity: A Key Component to Soaring Health Care Costs

A recent article in USA Today pointed out the impact of obesity on the nation’s health care costs. Congress is searching for ways to control health care while a new report provides a significant target: obesity.

Americans who are 30 pounds or more overweight cost the country an estimated $147 billion in weight-related medical bills in 2008, almost double the amount a decade ago. Obesity now accounts for 9.1% of ALL medical spending. An obese patient’s medical bills are 42% higher per year on average than a patient at a healthy weight ($4,871 for an obese patient vs. $3,442 for a patient at a healthy weight).

About 34% of adults – more than 72 million – in the USA were obsess in 2006, up from 23% in 1994. Two-thirds of people in this country are overweight or obese. “The average American is 23 pounds overweight,” Center for Disease Control and Prevention Director Thomas Frieden said, “and collectively, we are 4.6 billion pounds overweight.”

Taxpayers picked up about half the $147 billion tab for obese patients’ medical expenditures in 2008 through Medicare and Medicaid.

House and Senate bills to overhaul the nation’s health system both include money for community programs to prevent obesity.
